How NFC Tags Work

NFC tags are based on Near Field Communication technology, utilizing Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology and interconnection technology for data transmission. They operate using 13.56MHz high-frequency radio waves as the transmission medium, exchanging and transmitting information through inductive coupling. In NFC communication, the distance between the initiating device and the receiving device is typically within a few centimeters. When the initiating device (such as an NFC-enabled smartphone) approaches an NFC tag, it emits wireless radio waves of a specific frequency that is received by the NFC tag and converted into electrical energy to drive the tag's internal circuit to transmit internal data. The initiating device then sequentially receives and interprets this data, passing it on to the application for further processing. NFC tags can be passive or active. Passive tags derive energy by sensing changes in an external magnetic field and respond to communication requests from the initiating device. Active tags, on the other hand, have an internal battery and can initiate communication and exchange data with the initiating device.

In summary, NFC tags work by exchanging and transmitting information through inductive coupling, without the need for setting up both connected devices. A simple contact can establish a wireless connection. Compared to other passive RFID technologies, NFC tags have a shorter communication distance, typically within a few centimeters. This design makes NFC tags more suitable for scenarios requiring high security and short-distance communication, such as mobile payments, access control systems, and smart labels.
